Mediation can deal with unwelcome guests or overstaying tenants so it’s no surprise that Ecuador’s foreign minister, Maria Fernanda Espinosa, has announced that it is looking for a mediator to assist with the most famous squatter at their UK embassy, Julian Assange founder of Wikileaks.
Back in 2012 Assange sought political asylum in the London embassy following charges relating to sexual assault and attempts by the UK government to extradite him to Sweden, the charges have since been dropped, but he remains in violation of bail conditions.
Now Miss Espinosa has said that they want an independent "third country or a personality" to assist in remedying the 60 month stale mate. Assange remains of the belief that he will be extradited to the US to face charges for espionage following Wikileaks releasing classified US documents and communications.
Miss Espinosa said in Quito last week "No solution will be achieved without international cooperation and the cooperation of the United Kingdom, which has also shown interest in seeking a way out…from a human point of view, is not sustainable. A person cannot live forever in these conditions, and we are searching in a very respectful way with the United Kingdom ... for a solution."
Whilst under effective house arrest Assange’s Wikileaks has continued to publish confidential documents, including communications relating to Donald Trump’s relations with the Russian government before and during his presidential campaign.
